mmany years ago (Ka Erdy’s era) I was toying on the idea of writing a book on fiction. It dealt with religion where the people believed that it was the true one; that come judgment day Christ himself would call unto this fold and embrace all its members and save them from eternal damnation. It dealt with prophecies, God’s messengers, and biblical passages pointing to this religion as infallible and Christ’s exclusive right on ownership. Everyone was perfectly sure of this “truth”. But the story slowly unfolds – this belief, this faith, crumbles slowly,  Judgment day does come but not like a fairy tale of floating kings, queens, and angels being met by an almighty God in flowing white beard with arms outspread to his chosen children. The end came bluntly. In a stroke of flashing light. The people unaware and going about their daily routines, some even inside their chapels worshipping their ever-knowing God. What once was a flourishing world of green, beaches, and mountains suddenly disappears in the blink of an eye. Mere gravels of earth scattered throughout the constellation reminding this universe that life per se is not exclusive to a planet once known as Earth.

The story goes around that premise but it never reached print. People close to me advised me against it. They said it was against the teachings of the church. I tried to convince them that the story was classified as  “fiction” and it was a mere hypothesis on a “what if” possibility. Well, anyway I chose to keep quiet but thinking back maybe I should have had it published and relating to current events of the Church who knows it could have become a best-seller 🙂

In a way, compared to the great EVM we are a lucky lot. We manage to have a day or two with the family, go out on weekends, stroll along the beach taking selfies, and have a good night’s sleep come dark.  Oh sure, who doesn’t have their share of problems. But it’s nothing compared to what EVM and his right hand JS must have to deal with.  The multi-billion loans, the Omnibus Loan Agreement now on its third supplement which if I am not mistaken simply means procuring further loans with additional collaterals (church property) to pay off the initial loan. This syphoning spiral effect gaining momentum until we have no more to offer and the banks gaining ownership of the church properties.

Image result for iglesia ni cristo controversy imagesAdding salt to injury, despite the Church’s persistence to save face and convince the public that the Church is doing fine, the air of resistance continues not merely from known entities of Facebook but other personalities as well. Rappler has been trying its best to make the church “bite” but they won’t. Slowly ADD has become open in criticizing the church, Protestants and Catholicss discrediting the transfer of their clergy into the church as soon as the INC media makes announcements of alleged turncoatism of former preachers.

Not to be forgotten are the bad publicity brought about by the torture and deaths of former church members who were close to the family of the late Executive Minister Erano Manalo, the current Executive’s father. News blackout and quelling the news actually ignites the interest of the quiet public. The most recent being the murders of Michael and Christopher Marasigan by two men on a motorcycle in San Juan. Related or not, three letters always crop up – “INC”.

Never in our church history has the INC been so wrapped up in intrigues, questionable dealings, and simply put bad publicity. Senator Ping Lacson once commented when asked about the INC during the height of its controversy, ” ‘It not only disturbs me, it hurts to think na…It hurts to see a religious sect so close-knit na parang tendency now is to implode,’ he said.”

In effect, meaning external factors would not determine its demise but internal. And that is what is happening now. The timing couldn’t be more perfect.  It is the era of Digital Revolution. Wikipedia couldn’t have explained it better _

The Information Age formed by capitalizing on computer microminiaturization advances. This evolution of technology in daily life and social organization has led to the fact that the modernization of information and communication processes has become the driving force of social evolution.

Sugarcoating the image of the church with Web-ex services, grand expositions, and aids to humanity will only do that – sugarcoat. Nothing else.  The bank loans will still need to be paid, back payments of church rentals abroad will have to be settled, overseas church registration problems will likewise have to be solved, local repairs on all of the chapels, and the huge maintenance cost of the Philippine Arena or better let’s say the Ciudad de Victoria. Not to mention the smuggling case filed by the Bureau of Customs against the Arena builders and an array of “errors” like baptism using a kiddie pool or the recently “baptized twice” issue in Bulacan, the green-white-red thumbprint logo, the streamer depicting EVM as the “holy spirit”. There are so many.

Here’s a comment from one Juan Bautista who said it in a nutshell –

The Gods must be angry, there’s no mistake about it. But have you ever asked yourself, why? I have asked that myself many times and it is only now that I seem to have gotten the answer. As simple as it seems, it is punishment for what God had commanded onto his children. Since July of 2015, have we ever heard a sermon preached on love towards our mother and father? We haven’t, have we? The reason is quite obvious. as my wife would retort, “Buwelta sa kaniya yon! [whiplash to himself]”

Ephesians 6:2 ESV

“Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise),

Mark 7:9-10 ESV

And he said to them, “You have a fine way of rejecting the commandment of God in order to establish your tradition! For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.’

2 Timothy 3:1-5 ESV

But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people.

Ka Erdy during his sermon explained this very clearly, and probably the very reason why the church is in such disarray,  “… aanihin ang masamang kamalasan …” as Ka Erdy termed it.

Do you believe that the King would have the humility to ask forgiveness from his mother for the sins he committed against her and the church? Do you think her mother would forgive him? The church may not, but I think her mother would. God created mothers that way, that very special way.
